28 Years Ago, WNBA's First Dynasty Began

August 30 2025 | Edition #131
👋 Hey, Hoophead!
Atlanta’s win had everyone cheering - twice! Because with a single victory, they punched not one, but two playoff tickets: theirs and the Phoenix Mercury’s. That’s four spots officially locked! But don’t think standings or locked positions slowed our ladies down. On the court, it was all about the game.
And while we’re caught up in the action, let’s revisit where it all began. We’ve got a special piece from history for you today!

A Throwback! The Revolution Started Today

August 30, 1997. To most, it might have felt like just another night. For women’s basketball, though, it was everything. It was history in motion. It was joy, relief, pride, and validation all wrapped into one.
For Cynthia Cooper, it was something far more personal. Her mother, fighting breast cancer, was there courtside in a wheelchair, watching her daughter go off and claim the league’s inaugural Finals MVP. For the first time ever, red, white, and blue confetti rained down from the rafters of The Summit, not for a men’s team, not for college hoops, but for professional women’s basketball. A sight no one had seen before and one that would never be forgotten.
The Comets faced a Liberty team that had already beaten them three times, but when it mattered most, Houston took the crown with a 65-51 win. Little did NY know they would have to wait for that title for nearly three more decades. And little did anyone know…that was just the beginning of the Comets dynasty.
Led by Cooper, Sheryl Swoopes, and Tina Thompson, came three more straight titles. A FOUR-PEAT that remains unmatched in league history. If you look at the list of top 10 players with the most rings, you’ll find the Comets stamped all over it. But only ONE player from that list is still active today. Check out who.
Sadly, after giving the WNBA its best possible beginning, the Comets’ chapter ended in 2008 during the global recession. Still, the inaugural champs will always remain the heartbeat, the catalyst, the reason so many generations of women laced up and believed.
Because before the Aces superteam…before Caitlin Clark sold out arenas…there was Houston. And 28 years ago today, they gave us history.

Liberty and Storm Prove They’ve Got Fight

Who would’ve thought we’d be saying this back in May, but Saturday night was basically do-or-die for the Liberty. Another loss and all that regular-season shine could’ve faded quickly. But Sandy Brondello’s squad wasn’t having it. They beat Washington 89-73 in a win that felt way bigger than the score.
Why? Well, before the game, Sandy dropped the bomb: Sabrina Ionescu, Jonquel Jones, Natasha Cloud, and Nyara Sabally were all out. But it didn’t matter. The Liberty proved they’ve got depth.
All eight players who touched the floor scored at least six points, five hit double digits, and the vibes were all about balance. Marine Johannès had 14 and pulled out that crazy pass between the legs of Kiki Iriafen that even had the Mystics rookie shook. Check out the slick assist.
The real X-factor, though, was the bench, led by Isabelle Harrison. She poured in a season-high 16 points and gave NY exactly the lift they needed.
Out West, Seattle showed the same fight. Their playoff push was already tough, and most squads would have folded down 21 in the second quarter against the league’s best team, especially on the last leg of a brutal five-games-in-10-days stretch. The Storm didn’t as Skylar Diggins took over.
She capped a 25-6 third-quarter run with a dagger three at the buzzer, then let the Lynx bench know exactly how she felt with an NSFW message that was equal parts hilarious and fiery. Cheryl Reeve and Napheesa Collier were not amused. Since we can’t write her words here, we’ll let you read her lips!
By the end, Diggins had 23, with four other Storm players in double figures. Collier dropped 18, McBride 20, and Courtney Williams 18, but it didn’t matter. Seattle handed the Lynx just their second home loss of the season, 93-79.

Playoff or Not, The Drama Refused to Quit

Letting a player go always stings a little. Even more so when that same player turns into your nightmare wearing another jersey. Friday night might have been that day for the Sparks, who are surely regretting letting Odyssey Sims walk.
With just 13.6 seconds left, Sims nailed a go-ahead floater, giving the visiting Indiana Fever a 76-75 edge over Los Angeles. And honestly, it was the perfect finish to a brilliant game. That’s the kind of shot-making you love to see when the game’s on the line. Watch all the buckets from the final minute here!
Sims finished with 21 points as Aliyah Boston led with 22, and Indiana moved a step closer to their playoff magic number. Meanwhile, the Sparks… well, let’s just say the post-season seems to be slipping away.
Over in another arena, the playoff implications were nowhere near. The Chicago Sky vs. Phoenix Mercury game had one team already eliminated and the other comfortably in. Still, the Mercury struggled to close it out.
With 10.9 seconds left and Chicago down 4, Angel Reese got fouled on a layup, which she converted. While the Sky could have cut it down to 1, Reese missed her free throw, which some thought might have been calculated. But what HC Tyler Marsh said after the game was definitely a big, big turn-off! Check out what happened at the end.
Ultimately, Phoenix sealed an 83-79 win. And even with Alyssa Thomas playing strongly, the star of the night was Kahleah Copper. On her 31st birthday, she delivered an offensive masterclass with 28 points, including four 3-pointers.
And all Chicago was left with was, as Coach put it, "frustration!"

Gabby Williams showed up to the arena rocking a Marine Johannès tee, the one shouting out Marine’s famous “one-legged” shot. We’ve all seen those wild one-leggers from her, so no surprise Gabby’s a fan too. But back in June, Gabby actually had to face that exact shot. Marine pulled it out, and Gabby’s reaction said it all. Check that play out!

Paige Bueckers Vows to Build Something in Dallas

On one hand, Paige Bueckers has delivered everything Dallas hoped for when they drafted her No. 1 overall: instant production, leadership, and a reason for fans to believe again. On the other hand, the Wings only have nine wins to show for it.
But wait, Paige insists the story doesn’t end here.
She reached back to Steph Curry’s early Warriors days to explain her mindset. “I remember Steph Curry, before the Warriors became the Warriors, he tweeted, ‘just stick with us… we’re gonna figure it out. That’s the message…’,” Bueckers promised. Here are Chef Curry’s original words from 2009!
Friday night’s 100–78 loss to Atlanta was a reminder of how far there is to go. The Wings were down to just eight available players, only saved from forfeit by an “extreme hardship” signing of Christyn Williams. Yet Bueckers still delivered 16 points and 10 assists, proving why we believe in her.
She’s not blind to the climb, though. Injuries, inconsistency, and a lack of scoring depth have made this year rough. And fans have that nagging fear: what if she bails before Dallas figures it out? The Warriors had time to build around Steph, but things in Dallas feel a little shakier.
For now, though, she’s here to build. “I just have this undying belief in it.” But the front office must do its part, too. As Azzi Fudd’s father pointed out, Dallas needs to add the right offensive pieces so Paige doesn’t have to carry it all herself. And funny enough, with the Wings likely headed for the lottery - and Fudd projected as one of the top picks - it’s THE dream scenario.
We’ve already seen what those two can do together at UConn. Imagine that in Dallas.
