Caitlin Lit a Fire, Fever Burnt the Sun

June 19, 2025 | Edition #100
👋 Hey, Hoophead!

Time really does fly when you’re living and breathing hoops. This is our 100th edition, and we honestly wouldn’t be here without you. Whether you’ve been rocking with She Got Game since Day 1 or joined us somewhere along the way, thank you for being part of this ride. This space exists because of fans like you.

Here’s to the stories we’ve shared, the love you’ve sent our way, and the electric W moments we’ve lived together (with plenty more to come). One reader, Christel, put it best: “Such Good Info in This E Mail, Different From Any Other Place…Thanks.” That’s the kind of support that keeps us going.

And hey, it’s only fitting that this milestone edition lands on Juneteenth, a day to reflect, recognize, and keep pushing forward. Now, let’s get into it—between the most chaotic game of the season (so far), a much-needed sigh-of-relief win, and shooters who just won’t cool off, we’ve got a lot to unpack.

Indiana’s Chaos Night Ends in Cup Glory

“Forget Angel Reese, forget Paige Bueckers - Caitlin Clark is facing her biggest rival,” the internet echoed before Indiana took on Connecticut. Sure, we expected a little tension, but no one saw this chaos coming.

From tip-off, the vibes were off. You could feel it brewing at Gainbridge Fieldhouse. Clark had some early back-and-forths with Sun players, but it all blew up in the third. While trying to get separation, Clark ran into her old college rival Jacy Sheldon - who ended up poking her right in the eye.

Just when the two started jawing, something happened that no one saw coming. Marina Mabrey came in flying and shoved Clark to the floor. Check out the altercation for yourself. You’d think that was the peak, right? Enter chaos, part two.

With 46.1 seconds left, Fever up 87-70, Sheldon went up for a layup… and Sophie Cunningham just grabbed her and sent her flying. No play on the ball, pure frustration. Lindsay Allen tried to step in, but Sheldon was done. She bounced right up and charged at Cunningham like it was personal. You could feel the intensity even through the screen.

What shocked the fans and broadcasters throughout this game was the officiating. While everyone expected an ejection for Mabrey, refs just handed techs to Mabrey, Clark, and Tina Charles. Sheldon’s eye poke was upgraded to a Flagrant 1, while Mabrey’s shove became a Flagrant 2 after the game.

Meanwhile, the second scene, what the internet is now calling the “revenge foul” (and honestly, they might be right), had three ejections. But through it all, the Fever got the 88-71 dub. Clark dropped 20, and Indiana officially punched their ticket to the Commissioner’s Cup Final vs last year’s champs, the Minnesota Lynx. July 1 can’t come soon enough!

The Comeback Win That Had a Husky Heart

The Dallas Wings finally snapped their brutal seven-game losing streak vs GSV. Tuesday night marked their first home win since the preseason. With three new faces in the rotation, the Wings came out swinging. It was a physical, gritty start, but Golden State didn’t back down either. The Valkyries clawed the lead back to just two points at halftime.

The third quarter turned into a wild back-and-forth before the Wings dominated the last five minutes. Paige Bueckers found her stride among the chaos and drove Dallas to an 80-71 victory with 20 points. And how could she not? She had her people in the building. It was a mini-Husky reunion that had the arena feeling like Storrs.

Elsewhere, the reigning champs almost looked like they were going down. Things started slipping early for the New York Liberty, and by the third quarter, they were in a deep hole. But then came the spark.

Sabrina Ionescu, who finished with 34, flipped the switch. If you really want to get what this Liberty team is all about, this comeback 86–81 win over the Dream says it all. Despite the dub, however, it was a huge heartbreak for the Libs. Find out why!

Meanwhile, out west, the Seattle Storm slammed the door on LA. The Sparks showed some early fight, but Seattle answered fast with a 5-0 run. After that, it was all Storm. You already know who led the charge - Nneka Ogwumike, Skylar Diggins, and Erica Wheeler. That trio turned it all the way up. By the third quarter, Seattle had built a 26-point lead, and LA just couldn’t keep up, and the final score was 98-67.

Sky-fall and Sun-burn! Draft Dreams Might Be All That’s Left

While it’s still early in the season, for some teams, it already feels like the only thing left to focus on is getting better and making a serious case for a top draft pick next year. Chicago and Connecticut fans might already be scouting prospects.

Let’s start with the Sky (3-8). This one had to sting the most. They had a 12-point lead over the Mystics and still found a way to lose 79-72. Washington came out of halftime and went on an 18-4 run that flipped the whole script. Kiki Iriafen sealed the deal for the Mystics after she grabbed the loose ball ahead of Angel Reese and Kamilla Cardoso, and put them up by 5 with 30 seconds left. Check out the heads-up play by the rookie.

Then there’s Connecticut. After losing in Indiana, the Sun lost their 4th game in a row, this time to Phoenix, 83-75. That’s now ten losses for the Sun, who’ve tied their franchise record for the worst 12-game start to a season. Whether it was Phoenix’s defense or just the Sun’s fatigue, Connecticut couldn’t bounce back after falling early.

Meanwhile, over in Vegas, the Aces dropped to 5-6 after falling to the Lynx, 76-62. We’ll cut them some slack this time as they were without A’ja Wilson (again). Still, we have to admit that the Aces didn't bring their best basketball and were outscored 46-23 in the second half. While the Lynx took it home, they had a setback, too, as Napheesa Collier left the game clutching her back.

With the Commissioner's Cup Final set for July 1, that’s the last thing Minnesota needed. Lynx fans must be holding their breath (and praying).

 She Got Glam!

The crowd at Gainbridge Fieldhouse was chanting her name, and she gained over 100k new followers on Instagram. And it’s not just Indiana that’s loving her—it feels like the whole country’s on board. If you want to see just how fast her popularity’s blowing up, this wild turn of events says it all!

Managing a League or Draining It? Fans Unanimously Call for Cathy’s Exit

We ride for these players. Through the buckets, the bruises, the back-to-backs - we show up. We scream ourselves hoarse, buy the merch, and defend them online like they’re family. But lately, it feels like the ones running the league aren’t really riding with them.

Yesterday in our LITE send, we had this article on how David Stern built a league, while Cathy Engelbert seems to be just... managing one. And clearly, you all feel that too. 86.6% of you said she should be axed. That’s clear frustration. On top of that, fans and players are on the same page.

Remember when Satou Sabally called Engelbert “irresponsible” for adding more games? It was not just talk. The schedule is brutal. Phoenix got through it, and now the Connecticut Sun are knee-deep in a June grind. They are not in their best form, agreed, but in some of the recent games, fatigue seems to have played a part too. Along with that, fans are tired of recent officiating as well.

Sure, Cathy knows the business better than anyone. But running a league isn’t just about bottom lines. It’s about the people. Last year, the calls for her to step down were sparked by some bad takes. This year, it's about health. She says she’s building for the future. But what future are we building if our stars are burnt out?

Moreover, even the FO has been accused of "cheating” in the past. Back in 2023, Engelbert’s pledge of “charter flights for all postseason games” was later revealed to come with exceptions and qualifiers. It got to the point where players were airing it out on social media.

So, time and again, it has felt more PR than player-first. The next CBA will be a critical battleground for restoring trust. We’ll see if something shifts. Otherwise, the voices calling for change will only get louder.
