There might be more beneath the surface! Loudly or quietly, we’ve all been pointing fingers at the WNBA for stalling the CBA talks. But now, with roughly 60 hours left before the deadline, it turns out, or at least that’s what the league office claims, the delay might actually be coming from the players' side. Whatever the truth is, though, the W better brace itself, because Unrivaled might not be their only competition super soon. By 2026, to be specific.

ESPN’s Brian Windhorst warned, “You [WNBA] also have something that the NBA doesn’t….potential rival leagues.” And actually if a lockout does go down, players have options. With Unrivaled and a few other ventures in the works, they won’t necessarily have to pack their bags for overseas leagues.

Women’s basketball has a development league, the Women’s Premier Basketball Association (WPBA), which entered its fourth season this year and has helped nearly 80 athletes turn pro so far. The California-based league runs an eight-week season, featuring eight teams with 12 players each. In the past, players didn’t receive a salary but competed for a monetary purse. This season, though, the WPBA has introduced a revenue-sharing model tied to ticket sales and streaming.
What’s more, the league continues to grow in more ways, even if it’s still flying under the radar.
