Historic Pay Day for Women’s Hoops

November 08, 2025 | Edition #160
Hey, Hoophead!
We’re starting off with a “very new topic” today- the rising pressure on the W. Jokes aside, though, this time, it’s not internal, and things are actually pretty serious. Then we’ll see how the SEC teams fared. Sure, most of us are over watching top teams demolish opponents they have no business playing, but that wasn’t the case for everyone this time. So let’s get into it!

Project B’s Here to Play - and Pay (A Lot!)

Glad we’re all on the same page here.
We asked in our poll on Thursday if Nneka Ogwumike joining this new league, “Project B,” is a statement for the league, and most of you agreed. And well, after the details came out, we kinda feel the same.
For those who missed it, Project B is a brand-new global basketball league set to run across Asia, Europe, and Latin America from November 2026 to April 2027.
Now, coming back to the details, first and foremost, let’s talk investors.
We’ll get to the ones from home later, but the name that turned heads is a company called Sela, which is owned by the Saudi Public Investment Fund. No wonder the salary reveal had everyone’s eyes popping. On top of that, players will also receive equity in the league, just like we’ve seen with Unrivaled.
And then you have sports icons like Candace Parker, Steve Young, Novak Djoković, and Sloane Stephens backing it too, which just adds even more credibility to it. It’s like every update keeps making this thing sound bigger and bolder.
Check out how much players will earn. This is literally 8X higher than the WNBA supermax salary!
What could be better than this, right?
This sounds like a dream for everyone who’s been rooting for women athletes to finally get what they deserve. But it also puts a big question mark on the WNBA. This is the third rival league now, and if you look closely, almost everyone who’s had a say in the WNBA’s CBA talks is now somehow connected to these new ventures.
It’s starting to feel like the pressure’s piling up on the WNBA amid already tense CBA negotiations. Because while big names like A’ja Wilson and Caitlin Clark haven’t been tempted yet (by the other leagues), trust us, salaries like that could make anyone think twice.

Bring Home the College Spirit
March may still be months away, but the energy in women’s college basketball is already heating up — and it’s the perfect time to show where your loyalty lies. DICK’S Sporting Goods has a wide lineup of NCAA fan favorites, from jerseys and hoodies to tees and caps that let you rep your school in style. Even better, it’s all up to 40% off right now.
So whether you’re catching every game from your couch or just keeping the spirit alive year-round, this is your cue to gear up and wear your pride loud.
Grab your gear before it's gone.

Early Flex from the SEC Queens

Texas, Tennessee, and South Carolina - when the SEC’s top teams take the court, you know it’s got to be a show.
Let’s start with South Carolina. Game 2 had them facing off against their former assistant, Fred Chmiel, now the head coach at Bowling Green. The Gamecocks rolled through with a 114–47 rout. South Carolina shot 63.6% from the field while holding Bowling Green to just 24.3%. Seven Gamecocks hit double digits.
But you know how these early blowouts go…it’s less about the score, more about the look of the team. And if these games proved anything, it’s that the Westlake duo is so back (and dangerous). Nothing showed it better than Raven Johnson’s one-handed, picture-perfect dime to Ta’Niya Latson. You can’t miss this at all!
Meanwhile, in Texas, the Longhorns had themselves a pretty sweet night. Their 85–56 win over No. 24 Richmond marked their first top-25 victory of the season. But it didn’t start that way. Texas came out slow, trailing for most of the opening quarter before finally flipping the switch in the second.
From there, it was all gas, no brakes. Madison Booker led the charge (no surprises there), running the show on both ends like she was born for it.
And then there’s Tennessee, looking a little too similar to last season right now. They’re winning, sure, but not against the big teams. After falling to NC State, the Lady Vols bounced back with a 97–47 home-opening blowout win over ETSU. But even with a 50-point win, something felt… off.
Actually, “frustrating,” if you ask Kim Caldwell. She even said her team needs to “grow up.” Watch the coach blasting her team!
Still, we got to give props where they’re due. Zee Spearman dropped 24 points to lead four Lady Vols in double figures. But the real story became how the Lady Vols gave up 12 offensive rebounds to a team whose tallest player is 6-foot-2.

Last Poll’s Result: We asked, “Who’s Most at Risk of a Surprise Loss to Start the Season?” The majority of you called it! 53% of the voters predicted that there’d be no upsets, and that’s exactly how it went.

Your Weekend Watchlist

Grab your spot on the couch, a cozy blanket, and your favorite snack because weekend hoops are loaded with your faves!
The defending champs will be back in action against Florida State after cruising through their opener, thanks to the duo who are already living up to the “anchors” tag, Sarah Strong and Azzi Fudd.
But before the ball even tips, the Huskies are flexing a little, unveiling their 2025 Championship banner as the game starts at 4:30 p.m. on Nov. 9. Plus, along with workouts, UConn’s making sure content keeps flowing, too. Their beloved Azzi Fudd became the team’s latest target for laughs, courtesy of Strong and KK Arnold’s hilarious impression of her.
We could describe it, but really….you just need to see it yourself.
As for predictions, UConn’s 10-0 all-time record against them pretty much says enough. Now, over to LSU. It’s a non-conference game for the rest, but a special homecoming for Flau’jae Johnson in Southeast Georgia. It’s not accidental, though. Kim Mulkey has made these “homecoming” games a tradition.
And with the Tigers fresh off an 89-point demolition, it’s safe to say this one might be another sweet win. Tip-off’s set for 2 p.m. on Sunday.
Then there’s Duke, looking to bounce back from their Paris loss. They’ll face Holy Cross at 1 p.m. on the same day, and while the numbers give Duke the edge, Holy Cross is coming in hot after a nail-biting 72–71 win over Boston College.
And that’s not even all. Ranked teams are flooding the court all day, including Player of the Year hopefuls Hannah Hidalgo and Olivia Miles. Find the details here!
Indeed, it’s one of those weekends you just don’t move away from the screen.

Caitlin Clark X Michael Jordan

Caitlin, please give the internet a break!
If you’ve opened any social app today, you already know - it’s all “WHERE?” and “WITH WHOM?” flooding your feed. Because Caitlin Clark just made it to one of the most exclusive places, a spot fewer than 100 people have ever had access to. And yes, it’s owned by none other than Michael Jordan himself. Seeing CC added to that list, the internet collectively lost it… again. Here’s how CC shocked us for the 1000th time!
And while Caitlin was out making the elite list, Paige Bueckers was doing her own thing. And no, not at her alma mater this time. Also, not in a different country. She was back home, stepping into an entirely new role: Coach Paige! This moment was as wholesome as it sounds.
