Six Ejections Fail To Stop WVU's Miracle Win

November 15, 2025 | Edition #162
Hey, Hoophead!
There’s nothing like college basketball. The unpredictability, the surprises, the wins that pop out of nowhere; the energy stays unmatched. And well, it always seems to come from the places we least expect. Duke vs. West Virginia was supposed to be your standard ranked-vs-unranked matchup… only for it to turn into the most chaotic 40 minutes of the night. And that was just one storyline, the rest of the slate brought just as much heat.

Believe, Breathe, Beat Duke!

It was a wild, wild game…..truly the only way to describe it!
A scuffle.
Six ejections.
West Virginia down to five available players for an entire half.
And somehow… a ranked upset.
Everything began exactly how you’d think. The Mountaineers crowd showed up, filled most of the building, and then watched their team trail 23–20 at halftime. Then, right as the second quarter ended, everything flipped. What started with shoving between two players somehow escalated into a full-blown scuffle that ended in six total ejections and 3 Flagrant 1s. How? Why?
Those ejections meant WVU walked into the second half missing 51.1 ppg worth of production. Four starters gone. All of their first-half scoring gone. And just five players left standing: Sydney Shaw (the only starter), Sydney Woodley, Riley Makalusky, Celia Riviere, and Loghan Johnson.
They had two options: give up, or lean fully into coach Mark Kellogg’s mantra: “Believe and breathe.” And in those final 20 minutes, they chose the latter with everything they had.
Riviere completely transformed after halftime. Shaw delivered 16 points, seven rebounds, and knocked down five straight free throws. They stayed out of foul trouble, hit big shots, and kept their composure when every possible script said they shouldn’t.
And so, in a finish that felt straight out of a movie, the Mountaineers pulled off a 57-49 upset over No. 15 Duke.
When the buzzer sounded and “Take Me Home, Country Roads” filled the arena, Kellogg pulled his five players close and told them, “Let’s enjoy the heck out of this.” How could they not. It was their first regular-season win over a ranked team away from Morgantown since 2019!
Meanwhile, Duke - with just one player in double digits - watched a matchup they were supposed to control slip away. And now, at 2–2, those offensive issues are getting a little too loud to ignore.

Bears’ Near Bust, Sooners’ Show

Then there was the game that almost felt like an upset waiting to happen.
UNLV and No. 7 Baylor went back and forth all night, exchanging the lead nine times while each squad hit a max lead of eight points. The teams were tied only three times through four quarters, and by the end of the third, anyone watching might have wondered how the Lady Rebels could possibly lose.
Led by Jazmyn Lott, they were haunting their ranked opponents. So much so that Baylor had to call a timeout after two brilliant threes by UNLV. And if you watch that second one from deep, you might pause and ask yourself… wait, how in the world did she hit that in transition? Seriously, see it for yourself!
Anyway, the Bears pulled it together in the fourth, rallying from an eight-point deficit. Taliah Scott led the charge with 23 points, while Baylor’s defense clamped down when it mattered most, holding the Rebels to just five points in the fourth.
And just like that, Baylor escaped with a 62-54 win.
For No. 6 Oklahoma, the flashy plays and energy were still there, but struggling against an unranked opponent wasn’t the story. The Sooners led 57-33 against North Alabama, controlling the paint even though their shooting wasn’t great.
With thousands of school children and continuous screams, Aaliyah Chavez added 17 points and delivered a moment that had Lloyd Noble Center cheering, screaming, and standing on their feet! A show-stopping half-court buzzer-beater.
But the star of the night was Raegan Beers with 20 points, 11 rebounds, and three blocks, guiding No. 6 Oklahoma to an 89-61 victory. Four Sooners hit double digits, while Alexsandra Alvarado was the only North Alabama starter in double figures.

Miles’ Big Test & The Real SC

Let’s start with a big shoutout to TCU for probably one of the greatest games in school history against Tennessee State. But after three spectacular wins, the real test comes Sunday against No. 10 NC State.
For context, TCU hasn’t faced a top-10 team on the road outside league play since 2011! That said, don’t even try comparing this Horned Frogs squad to past versions. This is a revamped TCU under Mark Campbell, led by Olivia Miles. While the deciding factor will likely come in the paint at noon on the 16th, Miles continues to rack up impressive feats off-court. Though this one might also bring back a few memories of past.
And before you tune into TCU vs. NC State on ESPN, there’s a “Real SC” showdown in LA today. No. 2 South Carolina visit No. 8 USC. Sure, the Gamecocks remain undefeated against the Trojans (3-0), but with nine players available and USC coming off a thriller vs. the Wolfpack, it could turn into the unexpected thrill we’ve all been waiting for.
Don’t forget to keep an eye on Jazzy Davidson vs. Londynn Jones. The tip-off is at 9 p.m. ET on FOX.
Plus, don’t miss the afternoon clash between No. 14 Michigan and No. 18 Notre Dame at 4 p.m. ET. Through three games, Notre Dame’s success rides heavily on Hidalgo, but one player won’t be enough to counter Michigan’s versatile offense. Both squads are undersized, so this could swing either way.
The day also features UCLA, North Carolina, Kentucky, and Washington in action. Plenty of hoops to feast on. Find the details here!
So grab your snacks, settle in, and enjoy some “hoop-kend!”
