Until the 1981–82 school year, the Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (AIAW) was the governing body for women’s collegiate sports. Then, on March 28, 1982, when two governing bodies offered championships, schools could choose which tournament to enter. In that era, it was no surprise when No. 1 Louisiana Tech defeated No. 2 Cheyney State. Of the top 20 teams, 17 opted the same.
