Wings Soared, Dream Fought, Sky Collapsed

June 28, 2025 | Edition #104
👋 Hey, Hoophead!

Is there anything better than watching people rally around something that’s always deserved this kind of love and support? We’ve already seen history made, the level of play is through the roof, a new CBA is on the way, and big names continue to step up to invest. This time, it’s someone who’s spent their entire life championing women. But for all the buzz, there’s one issue that keeps rearing its head. In fact, it’s becoming a theme.

Injury Season? The Wounded Ride of 2025

Injury is the name of the game this season. With just a third of the schedule in the books, almost every team has already felt the sting. For some, it's been a scratch; for others, downright brutal. But if there’s one team truly feeling the weight, it’s Dallas. Already fighting to find rhythm, they’ve got four players on the injury report.

DiJonai Carrington has missed three games with a rib injury. Add in Ty Harris (left knee), Luisa Geiselsoder, and Maddy Siegrist (right knee). Then there’s the Indiana Fever. Just when Caitlin Clark fans were breathing again, she’s back on the sidelines with a groin issue. Fans think they’ve pinpointed the moment CC got injured, but is that the full story? See how her offseason actions might’ve come with a cost!

It’s not much better in D.C. Washington’s guard depth has been ripped apart. Jade Melbourne just cracked a tooth again (more on that later), and leading scorer Brittney Sykes has missed two games due to a right lower leg injury. Phoenix also got a scare with standout rookie Lexie Held, diagnosed with a right-sided pneumothorax. Thankfully, she’s making progress.

Meanwhile, the Liberty’s season has hit a roadblock, with Jonquel Jones out for 4–6 weeks (ankle sprain). Minnesota finally got Napheesa Collier back after a three-game absence, and Golden State still awaits Carla Leite’s (back) return. Then there’s Connecticut. With the league-worst record and star Marina Mabrey out for 2-4 weeks (left knee), things don’t seem to be getting any better.

By the way, that’s not even counting the season-ending injuries that hit before things even tipped off or in the first few games. So far, only the Atlanta Dream remains untouched. Knock on wood. Here’s hoping we’ve seen the worst of it.

Wings Fought, Sky Stepped Up, Dream Pushed - Still No Finish

You know those nights where it feels like a win even when the scoreboard disagrees? Welcome to this week. Dallas may not have sealed the W, but something clicked. After a five-minute scoring drought to start the game, they came alive. Right before halftime, Paige Bueckers gave the sold-out AAC - yes, Kyrie Irving and Cooper Flagg included - this buzzer-beating deep three.

The Wings erased a 23-point hole and even took the lead midway through the third. Sure, the Fever answered back with a 14-6 run and held on for a 94-86 win, but let’s not forget that comeback. PB dropped 27, and honestly, it finally felt like Dallas had some fight in them.

Speaking of fight, how about the Lynx and Dream? Overtime, chaos, an (almost) fight, and clutch all in one. Atlanta led by six in the third and even pulled ahead in OT, but Minnesota’s spark came back just in time. Was it the fear of letting this one slip? Was it that fiery moment between Napheesa Collier and Rhyne Howard? Maybe both.

Phee didn’t get to clap back after that push, so she just dropped 26, and the Lynx snatched a 96-92 win right out of the Dream’s hands. All six Dream players who clocked over 10 minutes hit double digits, but still fell short.

Meanwhile, Chicago played three and a half quarters of clean, strong basketball against the Valkyries. Their bigs handled the ball better, the offense flowed... until it didn’t. We saw a Kate Martin déjà vu - two fourth-quarter daggers. But who would've guessed the real difference would come down to two errant passes? In a blink, two turnovers, then a 12-0 run, and the Valks sealed Sky’s 83-78 fate.

Was it a lack of effort or execution? Nevertheless, the Sky showed more grit than they have in weeks, and that’s something.

Statements Made! Who’s the Superteam Now?

The Washington Mystics are on a mission. Well, so are the Aces- on a mission not to win more than two games in a row. Washington was missing key players, yet still knocked off Las Vegas 94-83. But it came at the cost of Jade Melbourne’s tooth. Yes, she actually cracked it in the very first quarter during this play.

DC led by 22 in the third, but Vegas didn’t go quietly. A’ja Wilson dropped 22 and sparked a rally that cut it to seven. But the Mystics shut it down. Sonia Citron led with 21, but it was Lucy Olsen off the bench with 14 who really surprised us. So, call it grit or guts, this DC team got both.

Meanwhile, Seattle looked like they were just having fun. After a tight start, they completely ran away with it. The Storm outscored struggling Connecticut by 22 across the second and third quarters and cruised to a 97-81 win. Aneesah Morrow had a career-high 20, and this one looked done before the final quarter even started. Now, the Sun have lost eight games in a row.

Then came the hottest team in the league. Six straight wins. League-best streak. You’re thinking Liberty, right? No, the tables have turned. Phoenix just leapfrogged NY in the standings, moving from third to second. Curious where your team stands? Take a look at the full standings here.

The Mercury took down the defending champs 106-91. Satou Sabally, Alyssa Thomas, and Kahleah Copper ran the show while holding Breanna Stewart to 17 and keeping Sabrina Ionescu quiet with just nine. Do we have a new superteam in town?

 She Got Glam!

Aces fandom’s favorite running joke? A’ja Wilson showing up with yet another special cake. Birthdays, milestones—you name it, she never skips the tradition. And of course, she always slays while doing it. But this time, the comments weren’t just about her looks. Everyone was asking the same thing: “What’s written on the cake?” Because if history tells us anything, A'ja’s cake messages are always iconic. Take a look at the message this time.

Malala’s Mission Finds the WNBA

If you condemn patriarchy, you know Malala Yousafzai. If you’re a feminist, you’ve read her words. And if you understand what it means to fight with grace, you’re already in awe of her. But what if we told you that beyond the Nobel Peace Prize, the global advocacy, and the recognised activism, Malala is, and always has been, a lifelong sports fan.

She’s been spotted courtside and in the stands, cheering on women in cricket, soccer, basketball, netball, and more. She was even at a Liberty game back in 2023. Here’s a picture of her with Sabrina Ionescu. But it’s more than fandom. As a kid, Malala wasn’t allowed to join the boys on the cricket field. That memory stuck with her. And now, she’s making sure no other girl has to sit on the sidelines again.

Malala and her husband, Asser Malik, recently launched ‘Recess,’ a global initiative focused on increasing participation and investment in women’s sports. You know what’s the best news? Their sights are right on the WNBA and NWSL. They’re looking to invest in both leagues because of their “huge potential” for growth and alignment with their mission.

They’re not doing it alone either. Recess is backed by Tennis legends like Billie Jean King and Ilana Kloss, who’ve always seen women’s sports not just as a passion but a business.

We recently told you about one of the WNBA’s pioneers expressing her interest in investing in the league. This is who we are talking about. Well, we said it then, and we’ll say it again, it's not just her. Now, it’s clear it’s not just athletes either. Advocates of women’s empowerment from all walks of life are showing up.

So…WNBA fans expect more expansion teams coming down the pipeline with some powerful brains and bold minds leading the charge.
