Dawn Staley and Geno Auriemma’s first head-to-head March Madness clash didn’t come as coaches. It was back in the 1991 NCAA Final Four semifinals. Staley, then a star for the University of Virginia Cavaliers, led her team to a 61-55 upset over Auriemma’s UConn Huskies. That game marked UConn’s first Final Four appearance, and Staley’s performance ended their tournament run.
Today, both will likely recall the details vividly, as they lead two of the nation’s top women’s basketball programs.
